Date/Time: 03/28/2003 - 0600 Location: Najaf Province - Iraq Background: Coalition forces currently have control of large parts of southern Iraq, and are in the process of capturing Basra City, the province of Maysan, large parts of the highway in Qadisiyyah and up until our position in Najaf. Current Situation: Charlie Company 1st Recon has been tasked with an objective south of our sister companies. This order comes directly from Maj. Gen. Mattis, with near-complete operational freedom. The only restriction is that we must not enter the city of Sa'Hatra. Primary Mission: Our mission is to investigate, probe, and, if deemed possible without unacceptable casualties, search an area located slightly southwest of Sa'Hatra. Local intelligence refers to this area as Al'Majhul (direct translation: "The Unknown"). Satellite imagery shows ongoing large-scale construction and moderate vehicle traffic, indicating potential military presence. However, drone reconnaissance did not reveal detailed enemy positions. If the area proves to be of no significance, or if the threat is neutralized swiftly, our secondary mission will be to assault the H-52 Airbase via Nisul. Further details will be provided as needed. Enemy Forces: Primary threat: Regular Iraqi Army units, generally equipped with Soviet-era weapons and demonstrating low morale. Some regiments have already surrendered, but assume hostile intent until confirmed otherwise. Expected Army Capabilities: Infantry: Rifle platoons with outdated equipment. Vehicles: We know they make use of light cars and trucks, the presence is likely to include BTRs and similar APCs, but no tank presence is expected. Air Threat: Possible helicopter presence at the H-52 Airbase. Each platoon is equipped with 2 Stinger missiles to ocunter aerial threats. Secondary threat: Fedayeen Saddam and other local militias, generally equipped with Soviet-era weaponry, but have been found with even older systems. Because of their general belief in the Saddam reign the morale is usually high, and surrenders are uncommon. Expected Militia Capabilities: Infantry Prepared ambushes and hastily threwn together squads, sometimes fighters are blended into groups of civilians. Vehicles: Known to make use of armored technicals, though some groups may possess old Soviet armor of varying quality. Civilians: The city of Sa'hatra has a significant civilian presence, and some presence is to be expected in Nisul, but locally they are expected to stay within the city-limits and not affect our operations. If they are in the way of our operations try to not harm them, but warning-shots are acceptable. Terrain and weather: It's 0600, the sun will go up at 0604, so you will have the sun in your back on the initial assault. The weather is expected to be clear, there's some fog hanging in the air, but it will hopefully clear up once the sun comes out. Even with the fog there's a good visual distance of about 1000m. We are in southern Iraq, so the terrain is somewhat forested with large open fields. Part of the Euphrates river runs through the middle of the area, separating Al'Majhul from the rest of the towns. Friendly Units: Primarily the Army is assigned to the Najaf Province, specifically the 3rd Infantry Division. They are currently focused on securing Najaf City and Al Kufah, so they can't provide active support. The 101st Airborne have begun to arrive to the province, but their primary tasking is to support the 3rd Infantry Division, so we don't expect them in the area. Once control of Najaf City and Al Kufah is more stable, both the 101st and the 3rd Infantry will assign forces towards Sa'Hatra, so having cut off the city before that will significantly help them. Own Forces The entirety of 1st Recon Bn Charlie Company is assigned to this tasking, but we are without much support. This means that at the moment we only have the following: Platoon 1: (Charlie 1, 1-1, 1-2, 1-3) Platoon lead with M40 element, 2 Rifle squads, 1 Weapons Attachment (60mm mortar and M240). Platoon 2: (Charlie 2, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3) Platoon lead, 1 Rifle squad, 2 Weapons Attachment (M240 and SMAW) Platoon 3: (Charlie 3, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3) Platoon lead, 3 Rifle squads with integrated weapons attachment. Company Command (Raptor Actual) Vehicles: Each Platoon has 6 Vehicles, the same as those used in Kuwait. Some wheels need to be changed, and some guns barely work with what we have. But we don't have any better and we don't have time to fix em, so we make do. Each platoon has: 4x HMMWV (M2) 1x HMMWV (MK19) 1x HMMWV (Unarmed) Mission: All forces: Check equipment and ensure all vehicles are mission-ready. At any newly taken hostile position, search for any intel. Platoon 1 (Charlie 1, 1-1, 1-2, 1-3): Phase 1: Move to Sideroad 5 and secure it up to the visual range of the bridge to Al'Majhul. Take positions on Sideroad 5 and if viable, move to Sideroad 6 and establish a east-facing roadblock on it. Inform Raptor Actual once Sideroad 5 is secured. If hostiles are encountered on the path to Sideroad 5 you are to clear it, if contact comes from Sa'Hatra you are to return it, but continue on mission. Phase 2: Once Charlie 2 arrives and takes positions on Sideroad 5 you can drop positions along that road. Conduct reconnaissance towards Al'Majhul and surrounding areas. Probe-attack Al'Majhul, and, if deemed feasible without unacceptable casualties, take the area. Report decisions and possible findings to Raptor Actual. Phase 3: Await further orders, including potential assault on H-52 Airbase. Platoon 2 (Charlie 2, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3): Phase 1: Await the go-ahead from Raptor Actual. Move to Sideroad 5 and take defensive positions facing eastwards, anticipating probable attacks from Sa'Hatra. Phase 2: If needed, take defensive positions from Charlie 1 along Sideroad 6 to let Charlie 1 focus on Al'Majhul. Phase 3: If positions along Sideroad 6 haven't been taken yet, do so and await further orders. Including potentially supporting Charlie 3 when they take positions along Highway 9 north-west of Sa'Hatra. Platoon 3 (Charlie 3, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3): Phase 1 & 2: Maintain roadblocks at the south-east of Sa'Hatra along Highway 9. Phase 3: If Charlie 1 secures a portion of Highway 9 north-west of Sa'Hatra, deploy half the platoon to establish additional roadblocks there.
Target: Atleast: we have identified what is at Al'Majhul, and we have cut it off from Sa'Hatra. None to low casualties have been taken. Expected: we have identified and secured what's at Al'Majhul, we have cut off the western and the north-western approaches to Sa'Hatra. Low casualties have been taken. Hope: previous goal + we have secured H-52 Air Base, and cut off Sa'Hatra from all approaches, totally preventing resupply of the city. Decision-Making: More specifics are up to platoon commands. ROE: Any visibly armed men are viable combatants and can be engaged, military aged men without weapons can be engaged by decision from Squad Leader. If civilians are encountered in Al'Majhul they are to be removed from the area during the time of this operation. Further restriction of ROE is up to platoon commander, but laxing compared to said ROE can be done by Company commander only.
